About S3000L

Through a cooperation agreement between ASD an AIA, the S3000L specification is a collaborative transatlantic effort, involving participation from European and American industrial, aerospace, and defence manufacturers, along with their customers. The primary objective of S3000L is to establish a global standard for the Logistic Support Analysis (LSA) process, which is a critical component in achieving the requirements of Integrated Logistic Support (ILS).

S3000L outlines the general requirements for Integrated Product Support, configuration management, and the analysis activities necessary for LSA throughout the lifecycle of complex technical systems. These systems, often characterized by their long lifespan and maintenance needs, include industrial, aerospace, and defense products.

Key concepts

S3000L overview

S3000L provides a comprehensive description of the LSA process and the associated analysis activities that are essential for defining and maintaining an effective support environment for complex, long-living products. Complementing the procedural chapters of the specification, a detailed UML model based on ISO Standard 10303, AP239, PLCS is provided. A schema derived from this UML model facilitates the exchange of data.

Purpose of LSA

The S3000L specification is designed to support various activities and requirements involved in establishing an LSA process, such as:

  • Creating an Integrated Product Support solution.
  • Identifying necessary resources to support a system.
  • Reducing costs while increasing availability.
  • Facilitating information exchange between different parties.
  • Storing data and results for future reference in a structured and methodological manner.

Effective LSA is crucial for maximizing product availability and minimizing costs throughout the lifecycle of technically complex and long-living products. By identifying the required resources and creating a robust product support environment from the start, the LSA process ensures all product support requirements are considered during the design, development, in-service, and disposal phases.
LSA Activities: The LSA process encompasses a broad range of technical and logistic analyses, and the documentation of these analyses forms the foundation for other ILS disciplines, including technical documentation and materiel support.

Scope

The S3000L specification offers guidance for analysis activities during the LSA process, providing a framework for structured information exchange. Key aspects of S3000L include:

  • Design of LSA Process: Supports the LSA process design in the initial project phases, including the conduct of an LSA Guidance Conference.
  • Product Breakdown and Candidate Selection: Provides rules for creating a suitable product breakdown and selecting LSA candidate items.
  • Analysis Activities: Describes the types and methodologies for specified analysis activities.
  • Cost-Efficient Support Concepts: Offers guidelines on processing analysis results to develop cost-efficient support concepts.
  • Customer Interface: Defines the interface between the LSA process and customer interactions.
  • Support Engineering Integration: Covers the interface between LSA and support engineering areas such as Reliability, Maintainability, and Testability (RM&T) analysis.
  • ILS Disciplines Integration: Describes the interface between LSA and ILS disciplines, ensuring the production of essential ILS products such as:
    Personnel and training requirements
    Spare parts and consumables support
    Technical documentation
    Special support and test equipment
    Facilities/infrastructure requirements
    Software support requirements
  • Maintenance Task Analysis: Includes guidelines for identifying maintenance tasks and conducting Maintenance Task Analysis.

S3000L contributors

The development of S3000L began in 2006, initiated by an international team under the joint chairmanship of ASD (Aerospace and Defence Association of Europe) and AIA (Aerospace Industries Association) representatives. A diverse group of companies and organizations contribute to the ongoing development and governance of S3000L through the S3000L Steering Committee.
