Governance

The governance of the S-Series Integrated Product Support (IPS) specifications is a structured, collaborative effort involving key industry associations. This collaborative framework ensures the development, maintenance, and harmonization of specifications that enhance interoperability and efficiency in the aerospace and defense sectors.

Governance structure

The governance of the S-Series IPS specifications is divided between two councils:

The S1000D Council which is responsible for managing the S1000D specification, focusing on the creation and maintenance of technical documentation standards. This includes overseeing updates, ensuring compliance, and addressing industry feedback to keep the specification relevant and effective.

The IPS Specification Council (IPS Spec Council) which oversees the development and maintenance of the broader suite of S-Series IPS specifications. This council ensures that the specifications align with industry needs and promote interoperability across military and civilian products and platforms.

Historical development

The origins of the S-Series can be traced back to joint working groups formed in response to NATO requirements established in 1993. This collaborative effort led to the development of the initial specifications.
