Title:Seafoam How-To
Author:AcidBath666
I finally went out and got some Seafoam. Well more like I finally found it. been looking for this stuff for months. I just decided to post some pictures of where to put it. Like other people I have questions of how to use it and what to do. I have heard nothing but good things about this stuff. So I'm glad that I finally found it in my area. It basically helps to clean deposits and carbon buildup in your engine. Thanks to people on the forum for the steps and info. Ok this is what the can looks like. I never knew what it looked like so I never really knew what to look for when trying to find it in every auto parts store in my area.
Here we go. You wanna do this with the engine warm. This is the engine compartment. "DOH" You can pour this stuff in several places, The PVC vaccum hose and the intake going from the brake booster hose both work. I put mine in on the hose that connects to the brake booster. It is located on the drivers side of the engine. It's the Round piece with the hose going into it with a rubber grommet surrounding it.
Heres a closer pic. This is the hose im going to disconnect to let it suck up the seafoam.
Now here is a picture of the PCV valve. The other location you can put this stuff. On my 95 CPI V6 its located on the passengers side head, Its the one thats circled. The piece that has a square around it is part of a flush kit that can be bought for a couple of bux. Helps flush out your radiator if you have problems with rust, debris, or other radiator problems. I have rust problems due to the previous owner not keeping up with the antifreeze changes, so my freeze plugs are all rusted, and you can see the rust looking down the on the cores. Cheap and easy to install. I Highly recommend doing it.
Here is a picture of the booster unplugged. When you do this you'll hear the vaccum sucking air in, and your rpms should jump a tad. The brake booster guardian devil sez..."OH NO YOU DIDNT JUST TOUCH THAT BAW!!"
This is me pouring seafoam into a cup to make sure I get half the can. I just dumped half in one cup and half in the other.
The can recommends using about 1/3 to get sucked into the intake, 1/3 in the crankcase and 1/3 in the gas tank. I decided to use 1/2 because I figured I would need more.
Now you want to put this stuff in on a warm engine. Keep it running, and take off the booster line, or pcv line. You want to put about 1/3 - 1/2 of the can into the hose. Let it suck it up. Dont force it in. This is a bad pic cuz its too bright, but I just stuck the hose pretty close to the Seafoam, It managed to suck it up on its own.
If you have someone with you it helps. As they can help keep the revs up for you. Dont rev too high. Just about 1500 or so and let it suck it up on its own. Some people will tell you to stall the engine with it. But as soon as it sucked all of it up, I just cut the engine on my own. At this time I went ahead and poured the other half of the bottle down the crankcase. Let it sit for about an hour. It'll start to work on the insides and help chew all that buildup that might be clogging your engine. After your hour is done. Go ahead and start it up. From what a lotta ppl say it'll start smoking like MAD! But I didnt really see that. Mine was just a little bit of white smoke. Nothing to freak about. But some people get LOADS of it and people wont want to follow you on the road because your the scary man in the old car that burns rings and transmissions for fun. At this point. Go ahead and take it for a quick spin. NOT MASHING it. Just take it easy and dont get too high on the revs. It'll take about 5 miles or so to get the smoke done with. Once you've got that. Change your oil 500 miles later. The container says that Seafoam is safe to use every 2,000-5,000 miles. But I really dont see a reason to do it every oil change. Twice a year is a little more feasible. I did this earlier today, and i notice a difference already. Its a little smoother at idle, and just feels like a little bit of lag has been taken out of the slight hesitation. I also put 1/2 of another can in my gas tank to help clean out the fuel lines a little. It is also advised to use it to clean your EGR with it, as that is the most common place that gets clogged with carbon that would need to be cleaned. |
