Title:EGR Valve Cleaning

Author:BajaChic (Tink)

Clean out EGR Valve on a First gen, "Z"code

This is for people who either want to uncarb their truck or ppl who are having problems with their truck such as a harsh idle/dying at idle/startup.

For this job you will need a 3/8 wrench. If you have a socket set and u can get it in there, all the power to you. And you would also need some carb cleaner/small brush and some patience. Also some gasket sealer would be recommended.

The EGR valve is located at the back of the intake. Take off your air intake to get to it. It looks like this:

Once you get the two bolts off, have fun taking it out. Its not the easiest thing to do, but it can be done, so have some patience, and pull her outa there. Make sure to grab the gasket that is there as well.

Look inside the valve...gross eh...grab some carb cleaner, and spray the crap out of it, and continue scraping it out with the small brush(toothbrush) and get it all out. Make sure to spray where the pintle is (the thing that you can push in and out) and make sure it doesn`t stick. Scrub/spray that as well.

While your egr valve is still off, start up your truck, rev it and that will further clean out where the exhaust gas is coming from, carb may fly out which is a good thing because then it wont go into your egr valve.

If you have it, get some gasket sealer and make it a tight fit, and bolt er back on, and you`re done!

BUT....if you're having the same problem again, you have 2 decisions to make, are you going to screw with it all again, or are you going to block it off.

If you want u can get some steel mesh, and another gasket and seal the mesh in between the two gaskets to block off all carbon that may come in, this is pretty effective.

Blocking off the EGR Valve:

Take the steps from above to take it off. Once you have it off, this is when a decision needs to be made. What am i going to block it off with. Other people told me you can fold a pop can in half and bolt it back on but i took a lil better approach of it. I took a 1/8 piece of steel. I outlined the gasket onto the piece of medal. Cut it out, and drill two holes for the bolts. Get some gasket sealer (this is a MUST, or else it wont be good enough, and air will get through and it clicks when you accelerate) slap some on between the gasket and the steel. You can also put it on the other side of the gasket to seal it from the block to the gasket.

Bolt her back on, and you will be extremely happy, and wont (knock on wood) have any more idling problems.

1 thing though. If your emission laws are strict, this could be a problem, when air care comes around, i might need to bolt the egr valve back on, but im not too sure. I just kno that my truck is working perfectly now`.

Good Luck, and i hope this helps.

*** Big thanks to BAJAchic for most of this info, and for the ppl whom helped me ***

If you have anything else you would liek to add, or a how-to on a second gen, go right ahead and add it.
