S-Series rear disk brake swap You will need an 82-up camaro or firebird dicsbrake rearend. All the d/b rears I've seen have limited/slip If you get one with the gear ratio you want use it in your s-rear,thus making the swap pay for its self,or after removing the reardisc sell it to some one that has a d/b rear for a back-up, thats what I did. These reardics rotors are the same size as the S front rotors and seem to work well with the stock booster, master cyl. and proportioning vavle. The ST booster [on some 4.3s] will give better braking with a V8 and a prop.valve can be added if needed. S rears have two diff. brake mounting flanges, basicly square [late model] or rectangular[early model] the rect. flange can be cut to square it up.With the d/b still on the orig. rear, scribe around the mounting flange, be accurate. Using the scribe marks as a guide C- clamp the backingplates to the S rearend flange[be accurate] scribe 4 new bolt holes on each b/p. Early rectangular flange will have to be redrilled. Take rotors, backingplates, and axles to machine shop, have holes welded closed and new ones redrilled on bps and [early flange if you have them]. S rear axle-hubs will have to be turned down to fit the hole in the reardisc rotors, dont enlarge the hole in the rotor, it will be to close to the axle stud holes and they could crack ! Now, just bolt the parts on. I tried to be brief but cover the essentials, its been over a year since I did this swap. If there is a question you can post or e-mail, I'll try to help. E-Z Rollin |
